Ho‘opono Services for the Blind is a branch of the Department of Human Services (DHS) Division of Vocational Rehabilitation (DVR) that provides comprehensive and specialized services that meet the varied needs of consumers across the State who are blind, both deaf and blind, or visually impaired.

What are the eligibility requirements? 

  • 55 years and older
  • Have a visual impairment that hinders daily tasks

What is the process for applying for services? 

  • Anyone can call our main line for a consumer (family, friend, medical provider, etc.). All we need is the name and phone number of the individual in need of services.
  • Submit an eye exam form completed by an Optometrist or Ophthalmologist. The eye report must be within the last 12 months.

  • Instruction on:
    • Personal Care
    • Home Management (Tactile Marking of Appliances)
    • Communication Skills (Basic Braille)
    • Assistive Technology (Basic)
    • Orientation & Mobility
  • Peer Support- monthly support groups (Oahu, Hilo, Kauai)
  • Connection with community resources
  • Low Vision Clinic
