Division for the Blind and Visually Impaired of Maine provides comprehensive services for visually impaired and blind individuals of all ages.

Maine Program Information

The Independent Living (IL) Program provides services to individuals of all ages who are blind or visually impaired and whose primary goal is to remain as independent as possible. Those interested in pursuing IL services will work closely with an IL Case Manager to determine eligibility. Services are designed to help individuals remain in their homes or supported living situations and participate in community life. To apply for services, please reach out to our program today!

Available services: 

  • Adaptive skill training provides alternative skills to accomplish activities of daily living.
  • Homemaking skills training may include meal preparation, shopping, and cleaning.
  • Individuals may be trained in a variety of personal management skills, such as managing money, dialing a telephone, and telling time.
  • Mobility instruction assists individuals in traveling safely through the use of alternative techniques.
  • The services are provided by our multidisciplinary staff in conjunction with vision rehabilitation therapists from The Iris Network.
